# Text not pasting, pasting twice, or pasting old text

> Fix dictations that do not paste, paste twice, or paste old clipboard text. Work through the steps in order, or watch the video walkthrough.

Superwhisper delivers results by pasting at your cursor. When pasting goes wrong, the transcription itself is fine: it's in [History](https://superwhisper.com/docs/get-started/history.md). Work through the steps below in order, and run a short test dictation after each one.

This page covers Mac and Windows. Steps 5 and 7 are Mac only: Accessibility is a macOS permission, and **Simulate keypresses** isn't available on Windows yet (see [Differences from macOS](https://superwhisper.com/docs/get-started/windows.md#differences-from-macos)). On iPhone or Android, see [Superwhisper on iOS](https://superwhisper.com/docs/get-started/ios.md) or [Superwhisper on Android](https://superwhisper.com/docs/get-started/android.md).

## Fix text that doesn't paste

**1. Confirm it's failing**

Open a plain text app such as Stickies, click into it, and dictate a short test sentence. If the text appears, Superwhisper pastes fine and the problem is in your other app. Note that app's name. You'll need it if you contact support.

**2. Stay in the text field**

Click into the field where you want the text, and keep it active until the dictation finishes. Superwhisper pastes at your cursor when the dictation ends. You can start recording, switch away, and come back, but the field must be active at the end. If you click to another window or the desktop first, nothing pastes. The text stays on your clipboard, so paste it yourself.

**3. Check that your recordings arrive**

Open **Home** and look at **Recent recordings**. If your dictation isn't listed, the problem is upstream of pasting:

* Select the right microphone in Superwhisper, and confirm it works in your system sound input settings (Mac) or Windows sound settings. See [Microphone, system audio, and Muffle problems](https://superwhisper.com/docs/common-issues/microphone-and-system-audio.md).
* Open the mode you're using and confirm it has a model you can access. See [Choose your model](https://superwhisper.com/docs/get-started/choose-your-model.md).
* If dictations get stuck while processing, see ["No voice found" or stuck processing](https://superwhisper.com/docs/common-issues/no-voice-found.md).

**4. Update Superwhisper**

We ship small fixes for individual apps often, so your problem may already be fixed. Automatic updates don't reach everyone straight away. On a Mac, click the Superwhisper menu bar icon and choose **Check for Updates...**, and install the newest version.

**5. Reset Accessibility permission (Mac)**

1. Open **System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility**. Use this pane, not the **Accessibility** item higher up in the sidebar.
2. Make sure **Superwhisper** is on.
3. If it's already on, turn it off and back on. macOS may ask for your password. This forces the permission to register again.

**6. Check Text input settings**

Open **Settings → Configuration**, click **Advanced settings** at the bottom, and scroll to **Text input**. See [advanced settings](https://superwhisper.com/docs/get-started/settings-advanced.md#text-input) for what each option does. Test a dictation after each change.

1. Confirm **Paste result text** is on. Turn it off and on again to make sure it saved.
2. Switch **Clipboard content** to the other option and test. If it doesn't help, switch back.
3. Turn on **Clipboard history**.

**7. Try Simulate keypresses (Mac)**

In **Text input**, turn on **Simulate keypresses**. Superwhisper skips pasting and types your result with a virtual keyboard instead. This often fixes apps that block pasting, such as secure fields, some terminals, and VMs. If it doesn't help, turn it off again.

This feature is experimental and supports only the standard US QWERTY keyboard layout.

**8. Check the mode's auto paste setting**

Open the mode you're dictating with, go to **Advanced settings** at the bottom of the mode editor, and find the auto paste option. Set it to **Default** or **On**. **Off** stops that mode from pasting at all. Test again. See [mode advanced settings](https://superwhisper.com/docs/modes/modes.md#advanced-settings).

**9. Contact support**

If the steps above don't fix it, email [support@superwhisper.com](mailto:support@superwhisper.com) with:

* your computer type (Mac or Windows)
* the model and mode you use
* the name of the app where text isn't pasting

Paste behavior is app-specific, and reports that name the app get fixed fastest.

## Old clipboard content pastes instead

This can happen when **Clipboard content** is set to **Keep what I have copied** (the default) in [advanced settings](https://superwhisper.com/docs/get-started/settings-advanced.md), under **Text input**. Superwhisper puts your earlier clipboard back after pasting. If the target app reads the clipboard late, it can pick up the restored content instead of your dictation.

Set **Clipboard content** to **Replace with dictation**. The dictation then stays on your clipboard, and what you had copied is gone.

## Text pastes twice

This usually means two delivery paths fired at once:

* If **Simulate keypresses** is on and the target app also accepts the paste, you can get both. Turn **Simulate keypresses** off for apps that paste normally.
* If you press the shortcut twice while processing, both dictations paste in sequence. Check History to confirm what happened.

If neither applies, email [support@superwhisper.com](mailto:support@superwhisper.com) and name the app it happens in.

## Auto-send fires when you didn't want it

**Hold shift to auto-send after paste** sends your message when you finish a dictation while holding Shift. It shows in [advanced settings](https://superwhisper.com/docs/get-started/settings-advanced.md) only when **Paste result text** is on. If messages send themselves, turn **Hold shift to auto-send after paste** off. This option isn't available on Windows.
