# History

> Review, search, and reprocess past dictations in History. Find where recordings are stored and how to delete or report them.

Superwhisper saves every dictation as you speak: the audio, the transcription, and the AI result. Use History to review past dictations, retry failed ones, and diagnose unexpected results.

> [!NOTE]
>
> History holds dictations only. [Meetings](https://superwhisper.com/docs/meetings/overview.md) live in the **Meetings** tab.

## Open History

Open History from any of three places:

* **Home** in settings: the **Recent recordings** list shows your last five dictations. Click **See all** to open the full History
* The **menu bar icon → History...**
* Right-click the **mini recording window** and choose **Open History...**

Click **Back to Home** at the top left to leave History.

## Search recordings

The **Search history** field at the top of History filters your past dictations.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Search filters the original dictation only, not AI-processed results.

## Reprocess a dictation

Retry a failed transcription or run an old dictation through a different mode without re-recording:

1. Open the dictation in **History**
2. Click the **reprocess** icon below the recording
3. Pick the mode to process it with

## Dictation stats

The **Home** tab in settings shows **Average speed** (words per minute), **Words**, **Apps used**, and time saved, for **This week** or **All time**. Meetings don't count. On iOS, open the app's Settings, where you can also reset your stats. On a Mac, the [CLI](https://superwhisper.com/docs/get-started/cli.md) also prints them with `superwhisper stats`.

## Report an issue

Report a problem directly from the recording it happened in:

1. Turn on **Error logging** in **Settings → Configuration**
2. Open the recording in History and click the **info** icon to show its details
3. Click **Report issue** in the details sidebar

To report by email instead, send [support@superwhisper.com](mailto:support@superwhisper.com):

* What happened, and the steps to reproduce it
* Screenshots of your Configuration pane and the mode's settings (including the prompt, for custom modes)
* The recording folder: open the test recording in History, click the **info** icon, then **Open file location** to reveal it in Finder, compress the folder, and attach it

You can also ask in [Discord](https://discord.gg/tF98XvJNvB), but email reaches the team fastest.

## Where recordings are stored

| Platform | Location |
| - | - |
| macOS | `~/superwhisper/recordings` (older installs: `~/Documents/superwhisper/recordings`; [custom locations](https://superwhisper.com/docs/get-started/settings-advanced.md#app-folder-location) apply) |
| Windows | The `recordings` folder inside the [app data folder](https://superwhisper.com/docs/get-started/windows.md#where-your-files-live), `%LOCALAPPDATA%\com.superwhisper.app` |
| iOS | Inside the app. Open History in the iOS app |

## Delete recordings

You can delete recordings by hand or let Superwhisper delete them on a schedule.

* **In History**: right-click a recording and choose **Delete**. To delete several, select them (hold Shift) and click **Delete** in the selection bar, or **Select all** first
* **In Finder**: open a dictation's **info**, click **Open file location** to open the recordings folder, then delete files directly

### Delete recordings automatically

Use **Keep recordings for** to set how long Superwhisper keeps recording files on disk. It deletes older recordings automatically, including [meetings](https://superwhisper.com/docs/meetings/record.md#find-past-meetings).

1. Open **Settings → Configuration**
2. Set **Keep recordings for** to **Forever**, **1 day**, **1 week**, **2 weeks**, **1 month**, **6 months**, or **1 year**

The default is **Forever**. The same option is in the Windows preferences. If you choose a shorter period, Superwhisper warns you before it deletes existing recordings.

If your organization sets a [recording retention](https://superwhisper.com/docs/enterprise/configuration.md#recording-retention) period on an Enterprise license, the option is locked and shows that your organization manages it.
